How the ladder works

Quick answers to the most common questions about challenges and match play. The full official rules are linked above.

How do I sign up for the ladder?

Create your free player profile on the Sign up page and check “Pershing Field Park ladder”. Your ladder spot is added right away, and you can join mixed doubles (or request a partner) from that same form.

How do challenges work?

Open the singles ladder and challenge a player above you in the standings. A ranking challenge reaches further the deeper your target sits — anyone ranked #1–9 can be challenged by players up to 3 spots below them, #10–19 by up to 4 spots, #20–29 by up to 5 spots, #30–39 by up to 6 spots, and so on — one extra spot for every ten ranks. You can never issue a ranking challenge against someone ranked below you. An activity challenge targets someone 4 to 6 spots below you — it counts toward activity points but never changes ladder positions.

How many challenges can I have open at once?

You can have up to 3 outstanding challenges at a time as the challenger. "Outstanding" means a challenge that is still waiting for a response, or one that was accepted but the match hasn't been played yet. You also can't send a second challenge to the same player while one is already outstanding.

How many challenges can I receive?

There's no hard cap on incoming challenges, but they're naturally limited: a ranking challenge can only come from a player up to 3 spots below you, plus 1 extra spot for every ten ranks you sit down the ladder — so 4 spots at #10–19, 5 at #20–29, 6 at #30–39, and so on. An activity challenge can only come from a player 4 to 6 spots above you. Each challenger can only have 3 of their own challenges open, and can't immediately re-challenge you after you've played.

What happens after I accept a challenge?

You and your opponent have 10 days to play the match. You'll get a reminder about 24 hours before the deadline. Whoever plays the match reports the score — the result is confirmed through the app.

What happens if I decline a challenge?

You have 2 free declines per season. A decline our team rules justified (a medical issue, or a scheduling conflict you told us about in advance) is exempt and doesn't use one of your free declines. An unjustified decline uses one of your free declines and drops you below the challenger — the same movement as if the challenger had won. Declines are reviewed by our team, who can override the result when there's a valid reason.

What if I don't respond in time?

You have 72 hours (3 days) to accept or decline. If you don't respond, the challenge expires automatically and no match is recorded. An expired (unanswered) challenge is not counted as a decline.

There is a cost, though: on a ranking challenge, letting the window lapse means the challenger moves above you — you drop one spot, exactly as if they had won the match. Declining instead is the cheaper exit, since it only uses one of your free declines. Activity challenges never change ladder positions, so ignoring one only expires it.

What happens if we don't play within 10 days?

Once you accept, you have 10 days to play the match. If the deadline passes with no result, it becomes a forfeit — the challenger is owed a win by default, pending review. Our team can adjust the result if there was a valid reason the match couldn't be played.

What's the inactivity policy?

There isn't one right now. Your position only changes when you play, so taking a few weeks off won't cost you spots, and we won't send you inactivity warnings. The page updates itself if that ever changes.

Can I cancel a challenge I sent?

Yes. You can withdraw a challenge any time before the match is played, and it won't count against you.

Can I challenge the same person repeatedly?

After you play someone, you can't challenge that same player again for 14 days. You also can't play more than 2 consecutive challenges against the same opponent in a row — you'll need to play someone else in between.

How do activity points work?

Every match earns activity points: 3 for a win, 2 for a tie, 1 for a loss. Playing at least 3 matches earns you a glow wristband, and the top activity-point earner takes the Top Player trophy at season's end.

When does the season run?

The Fall 2026 season runs September 9 – November 16, 2026. No new challenges can be issued after the season ends.
